One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

While the project isn’t far from typical, I do feel like we’ve had many ‘doors close’ and setbacks. I am not the most patient person so I will admit that I moved too quickly at times in an effort to get us moved over to Marin before school started (missed that deadline by a month).

Planning is really the most important step in a remodel. Understanding timelines and deliverables cannot be overstated. Covid has really screwed up access to consumer products so everything from refrigerators (5 month lead time) to tile makes sticking to a deadline nearly impossible. And the domino effect is that if your materials aren’t on site when the contractor is ready for them, he will leave for another job and return, not when your items arrive, but when he’s good and ready to work for you again!

I could not wait for tile to be sourced and shipped so I went to Flor and Decor for marble tiles. I purchased the last 13 boxes of carrara honed marble 3 x 9 tiles and left the store feeling relieved that something felt easy!

Because marble is a natural stone, you can of course expect variation in the material. You want to make sure your boxes of tile are the same SKU number coming from the same lot (which I did) but holy smokes these marble tiles are not in the same family let alone the same SKU/lot. From the white and black veining of the calacatta to the blue tinted and the snowy white tiles, our kitchen backsplash would look ridiculous had these been installed.

Needless to say, I am now waiting to hear when I can get 55 sq ft of carrara marble from All Natural Stone and will be moving into the house with no backsplash. Just hoping we can get the tile and installation before the holidays!
